In late April 2021, President Biden signed the FASTER Act, legislation that declares sesame as a major food allergen. As of 2023, sesame will be required to be listed on food labels along with the other eight major food allergens – dairy, soy, wheat, peanuts, eggs, tree nuts, fish and shellfish. It is estimated that 1.6 million people in the US are allergic to sesame and many children with food allergies also react to sesame.
