This old proverb dates back to the mid-1800s but it still holds true today. Eating apples, which are available year round, benefits your heart, teeth, waistline and gut.

Apples:

Are a source of pectin, a soluble fiber that helps to lower bad LDL cholesterol which increases your risk for heart disease.

Are a good source of potassium which helps to lower high blood pressure, yet most of us do not get enough of this important mineral every day.

Contain tannins which have anti-sticky properties that help to reduce the bacteria in your mouth from interacting with your teeth. This reduces the buildup of dental plaque.

Are crunchy and satisfying to eat and it takes time to chew a fresh apple. This may help you feel fuller longer and increase your sense of satisfaction between meals.

Contain fiber that feed your healthy bacteria, keeping your gut microbiome healthy and able to fight off unhealthy bacteria that could cause you harm.

A small sized one has 55 calories, medium 70 and large 110.
