Too Much Sodium – No, Too Little Potassium

Americans eat too few fruits and vegetables, a known excellent source of potassium. Consequently, Americans get too little potassium. Why is that important?

Research has shown that potassium has a positive effect on controlling blood pressure and reducing the risk for heart disease. Evidence is building that it is important to consider the ratio of sodium to potassium. Americans consume too much sodium and not enough potassium. It is recommended that adults consume no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium each day. The estimated, current intake is over 3,500 milligrams. The daily recommendation for potassium was updated in 2019. Women are recommended to consume 2,600 milligrams a day and men 3,400 milligrams. For both sexes the intake of potassium falls far short of the recommendation.

Experts feel that a ratio of 1 to 1 would be the best combination for sodium and potassium to work together to help keep blood pressure under control and reduce the risk for heart disease. Bottom line: Try to reduce your intake of sodium and add more fruits and vegetables to your diet to increase your potassium intake.
