According to recent USDA research, it was found:

That 28% of people did not even attempt to wash their hands before handling food.

That 60% of kitchen sinks were contaminated with germs after participants washed or rinsed poultry. It is unnecessary to wash poultry before cooking. Heat will kill any harmful substances, whereas washing is more likely to spread them around kitchen surfaces.

That only 5% of home cooks wash their hands after touching raw chicken products.

Most foodborne illness happens because home cooks mishandle food. Be a safe cook.
