A study (Lower serum 25(OH)D levels associated with higher risk of COVID-19 infection in U.S. Black women (plos.org) estimated that Black American women with low levels of vitamin D were almost 70% more likely to get COVID-19. These women frequently have lower levels of vitamin D because those with darker skin do not absorb vitamin D from the sun as effectively and some in this group may wear clothes that covers much of their skin. If the women were overweight their risk of infection was even higher.
It is widely known that vitamin D deficiency and obesity are associated with a higher risk for osteoporosis, cancer and heart disease. The findings of this study add COVID-19 to that list.
