Whole Eggs Are Better For Building Muscles

In a study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition researchers found that eating whole eggs instead of just egg whites more effectively rebuilt muscles after resistance exercise. Nicholas Burd, a University of Illinois professor said that the widespread practice of throwing out the egg yolk to maximize dietary protein intake from eggs is counterproductive. Yolks contain less protein than found in egg whites which are almost all protein but the yolks also contain other key nutrients and food components that appear to boost the body’s ability to utilize the overall protein in eggs to build muscle. This gives support to the theory that isolated protein is not as useful to the body as protein found within a food matrix, such as the whole egg.
