The Scoop On Hemp Seeds

Hemp is an interesting plant and one of the oldest cultivated crops in the world. Growing the plant has little environmental impact and the entire plant can be used. Seeds become human or animal feed as well as part of cosmetics. Stems turn into animal bedding, construction materials, paper and textiles. The flower is ornamental or can be used in cosmetics or pharmaceuticals (medical cannabis). And, the root system extracts and eliminates heavy metals from the soil.

Hemp seeds are 20 to 25% protein, 20 to 30% carbohydrate, 25 to 35% fat, and 10 to 15% fiber. The seeds are an excellent source of thiamin, phosphorus, magnesium, and manganese and a good source of vitamin B6 and iron, in addition to being rich in antioxidants and other bioactive compounds that insure health.

Hemp seeds are safe to eat and can be part of a healthy diet sprinkled on salad, yogurt, oatmeal or added to baked recipes. They are not magic seeds and there is not enough evidence to show they can improve symptoms of multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and heart disease.
