A Portion or a Serving – What Is the Difference?

A portion is the amount of a food or a drink that you choose to eat at one sitting. The amount of food can be large or small, unique to the person serving the food.

A serving is a standardized amount of a food or a drink. A serving is supposed to reflect what a person should consume at one sitting. Serving sizes are defined by the FDA and are based on studies of the eating habits of adults and children. Standard serving sizes appear on the Nutrition Facts panel of food labels and they are used to calculate the nutrition information displayed on the nutrition label. Standard serving sizes are often used in group feeding settings, like school lunches or hospital meals.
