Some Caffeine During Pregnancy May Be Healthy

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend that pregnant women limit their caffeine consumption to 200 milligrams a day, the amount found in two, 6-ounce cups of coffee. Even with this recommendation many women feel guilty drinking coffee during pregnancy.

New research (Assessment of Caffeine Consumption and Maternal Cardiometabolic Pregnancy Complications | Pregnancy | JAMA Network Open | JAMA Network) not only confirmed that moderate levels of caffeine during pregnancy are safe but those women who drank some coffee had a lower risk for gestational diabetes. The researchers also felt the phytochemicals in coffee may contribute to less inflammation and less insulin resistance which lowered the risk for gestational diabetes.
