We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

When coffee was rationed in England during World War II, roasted fig was added to stretch the coffee and complemented the beverage with its similar taste and subtle flavor. This led the founder of FigBrew (FigBrew – Roasted Figs for a Healthy Lifestyle), who loved coffee but experienced digestive upsets after drinking it, to experiment with an alternative hot beverage.

Figgee, an alternative coffee drink, and Mellow Mix, a coffee and fig mix were born.

Figs are alkaline so they offset the acid found in coffee.

FigBrew Figgee is made from roasted, ground figs and after brewing by any standard coffee method, it resembles a taste somewhere between coffee and tea with a rich amber color. The brand recommends 1 teaspoon of Figgee for each 8-ounce cup of alternative coffee. It has approximately 12 calories in a cup with no caffeine, a trace of sodium, 34 milligrams of potassium and small amounts of a wide array of vitamins and minerals. Figgee can also be mixed with your favorite coffee in a ratio of two-thirds coffee to one-third Figgee.

FigBrew Mellow Mix is a mix of coffee and roasted, ground figs. It offers a rich robust cup of coffee which can be brewed by any standard coffee method. The brand recommends 1 to 1 ½ teaspoons of Mellow Mix for each 8-ounce cup. It has approximately 11 calories in a cup with 119 milligrams of caffeine, 8.5 milligrams of sodium, 146 milligrams of potassium and small amounts of a wide array of vitamins and minerals.
