New in the Market: Zevia Beverages

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

Zevia drinks are a collection of zero-calorie beverages.  All of the drinks are sweetened with Stevia which comes from a shrub, native to South America, which is 200 times as sweet as sugar but has no caloric value and does not raise blood sugar levels. The added flavors used are plant-based and all sodas, energy drinks and mixes are clear because no added colors are used.

We sampled a number of the brand’s beverages. There is enough variety to please each person’s tastes. All of the drinks were pleasantly sweet but not overly so.

Zevia Zero Calorie Soda comes in a 12-ounce can in14 flavors. Ten are caffeine-free. Four have caffeine: Zevia Cola 42 milligrams (mg) in a can, Dr Zevia has 42 mg, Mt Zevia has 55 mg, and Cherry Cola has 38 mg. The soda line is NonGMO (Verified Products – The Non-GMO Project), Certified Gluten Free (Gluten Intolerance Group of North America – GFCO), vegan, and certified kosher (OU).

Zevia Organic Tea comes in a 12-ounce can in 8 flavors. The teas have zero calories. Two flavors are caffeine free and the others have 45 mg a can. The tea line is NonGMO, Certified Gluten Free, USDA Organic, Fair Trade Certified, vegan, and certified kosher (OU). The color for the tea beverages is from the natural tea brewing process.

Zevia Zero Calorie Energy comes in a 12-ounce can in 4 flavors. Each can has 120 mg of caffeine. The energy line is NonGMO, Certified Gluten Free, vegan, and certified kosher (OU).

Zevia Kidz is another zero calorie option available as a 4-pack of 7.5-ounce cans in 4 flavors. The cans feature Disney characters. The Kidz line is NonGMO, Certified Gluten Free, vegan, and certified kosher (OU).

Kristina Cooke, RD, Zevia’s Health and Wellness Program Manger, told us that Zevia is a good alternative for dialysis patients and those looking to lower sodium or potassium because all the beverages are sodium, potassium and phosphorus free.
