New in the Market: Kontos Fillo and Flatbreads

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

Kontos Foods is a New Jersey-based provider of artisan breads and traditional Mediterranean foods.

Over 70 years ago Evris Kontos, one of the company founders, brought his experience as a master fillo maker from Cyprus. Kontos developed this light, flaky pastry into varying thicknesses to meet the need of cooks. #4 Fillo is the thinnest and #10 the thickest and strongest Country-Style Fillo. All are sold frozen in 16-ounces packages.

Kontos’ hand-stretching method makes their flatbreads brown on the outside but soft and flavorful on the inside. We tasted Tandoori Naan Original from the Rustics Collection. Two naan breads are packaged in an 8.8-ounce resealable package. One-half naan (approximately 2 ounces) has 180 calories, 4 grams of fat, 6 grams of protein, 30 grams of carb (with a trace of fiber and 1 gram of added sugar), 60 milligrams of potassium and 280 milligrams of sodium.

New of the Kontos flatbread line is Gordita a soft flatbread which can be used to make stuffed sandwiches. Gorditas come 10 to a package. One Gordita has 155 calories, 3 grams of fat, 6 grams of protein, 28 grams of carb (with 2 grams of fiber and a trace of added sugar), no potassium and 295 milligrams of sodium.

All of the products we sampled were kosher (OK) and halal certified.
