A Pegan Diet?

Mark Hyman, MD proposed the Pegan diet in 2015. The Pegan diet is part Paleo and part vegan. Followers are encouraged to focus on whole, fresh foods and to avoid processed foods and products of modern agriculture. Dr. Hyman stresses 75% plant-based foods, preferably organic and local, and 25% animal-based foods. He recommends no dairy, gluten or grains, and beans. Eggs, sustainably-raised, grass-fed meat and fatty fish should be eaten as a condiment. Sugar is allowed as an occasional treat.

While there are no research studies on the Pegan diet, with its emphasis on vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, heart-healthy fats, and minimally processed foods, it is a nutrient dense diet. Excluding dairy, gluten, grains, and legumes for healthy people are questionable.
