We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.
Bellwether Farms founded in 1986 produces premium sheep and cow’s milk products. The farm is located in Sonoma County, California where all cheeses and yogurts are made.
We found Bellwether Farms’ Sheep Milk Yogurt to be creamier but slightly thinner than traditional yogurt. The yogurt comes in 6-ounce containers, is full-fat, and contains 12 active cultures. We tasted three flavors.
Plain – has 140 calories, 9 grams of fat, 10 grams of protein, 6 grams of carb (2 grams of natural sugar), 90 milligrams of sodium and 300 milligrams of calcium. It had a pleasant neutral flavor with no tangy aftertaste often found in plain yogurts. It was our favorite.
Blackberry– has 170 calories, 8 grams of fat, 9 grams of protein, 16 grams of carb (11 grams of sugar), 80 milligrams of sodium and 300 milligrams of calcium.
Vanilla – has 170 calories, 9 grams of fat, 10 grams of protein, 13 grams of carb (9 grams of sugar), 90 milligrams of sodium and 300 milligrams of calcium. It is also available in a 16-ounce size.
Whole Milk Basket Ricotta is made from Jersey cow milk. It has a slightly sweet flavor and very creamy texture. You would be tempted to eat it by the spoonful. It comes in its own straining basket, in a 12-ounce package. We used it to make stuffed shells which were a hit with our tasters. A one-quarter cup serving has 130 calories, 11 grams of fat, 7 grams of protein, 2 grams of carb (1 gram of natural sugar), 120 milligrams of sodium and 250 milligrams of calcium. In 2016, to celebrate 30 years in business, the Bellwether Farms Foundations was started. The company pledges 1% of their sales to support organizations that provide hunger relief or food-related education in communities across the US.
