new in the market

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think. Can a meatball without meat still be a meatball – of course! Nate’s Meatless Meatballs are a good example available frozen in a 10.5-ounce reclosable bag. Each bag holds about 20 small, soy-based, cooked meatballs that can be heated on the stove, in the oven or microwave. They are available in 3 flavors… … Read More

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think. Liquid meal replacements are used for weight control, to help with patient rehabilitation during or after medical treatment, or after a workout as a recovery drink. Orgain a USDA certified organic, ready to drink, meal replacement was developed by Andrew Abraham, M.D. a cancer survivor and a family practice physician. Many products in this category, though healthy, taste chalky or have an aftertaste. This makes them less likely to be used on a regular basis. Orgain delivers a good taste. The Creamy Chocolate Fudge has a strong chocolate flavor and creamy mouthfeel. Sweet Vanilla Bean is sweeter with a vibrant vanilla taste. We did not sample the third flavor, Iced Cafe Mocha, but assume that it also delivers a good coffee taste. All flavors are packaged in a recyclable, 11-ounce, tetra Pak (drink box) with a shelf life of over a year without preservatives… … Read More

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think. Almost everyone has a bottle of vanilla in their cupboard. We often take this humble flavoring for granted but adding vanilla to a recipe can have a marked effect on the end product. Not only does it add the distinct vanilla flavor but it boosts other flavors. In small amounts it enhances chocolate, coffee, fruit and nut flavors. When used with citrus it covers the acid bite. Nielsen-Massey produces excellent vanilla products. We recently tasted two. Organic Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract does not contain bourbon. The term is a geographic reference to the Bourbon Islands – Madagascar, Comoro, Reunion, Seychelles and Mauritius – off the coast of Africa. These islands are one of the four major vanilla producing areas in the world. This product has a vibrant vanilla flavor and aroma. It is USDA certified organic, gluten free, and kosher (cRc)… … Read More

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think. Fruit snacks are flooding the market as the government and policy making agencies are encouraging Americans to eat more fruits and veggies daily. All-fruit bars are a natural alternative to cereal and energy bars. We recently looked at two brands. That’s It bars are just that, 2 ingredients pressed into a bar – Apple Apricot, Apple Cherry, and Apple Pear. Each flavor has 100 calories and 3 grams of fiber. They are kosher, vegan, and gluten-free. Each bar tasted like the fruit variety. Apple Apricot was tangy sweet, Apple Cherry pleasantly sweet, and Apple Pear had the mildest fruit flavor. All 3 bars were far less sweet than most products in this category because there are no sweeteners or fruit juice concentrates added… … Read More

Crazy Cuizine is a brand of Day-Lee Foods, producing a small quality line of Asian frozen foods. We recently tasted three of their products, Chicken Potstickers, Teriyaki Chicken and Mandarin Orange Chicken. All three are fully cooked and simply need to be reheated and served. They were all excellent products… … Read More

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think. Every so often a new food product is introduced that is not only healthy, but just plain fun. Grapple apples are exactly that. Grapple apples start as either Washington State Gala or Fuji apples. Using a patented process the apples are gently bathed in a 100% food grade grape flavor solution. We are not talking about bubble gum artificial grape flavor. The apples both smell and taste of a delicate, subtle Concord grape flavor. You crunch into the apple while experiencing a mild grape smell and taste. The grape flavor does not overpower the original apple but blends with it in taste and texture for a mouthful of fun. Kids will love these apples… … Read More

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think. Tofutti Cuties are mini, dairy-free, ice cream sandwiches that we have known about and enjoyed for years. It was a pleasure to revisit the Tofutti brand to see the numerous new dairy-free products currently available. People with lactose intolerance, the inability to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and milk products, or those allergic to milk, benefit from dairy-free products that mimic their dairy counterparts. The Tofutti brand got its start when a Brooklyn kosher delicatessen owner, David Mintz, was looking for nondairy products to use in his restaurant in the 1970’s. He discovered tofu and began experimenting and turned it into a frozen dairy-free dessert. The brand has since developed a number of other products… … Read More
