Some cities and counties have imposed a beverage tax on sweetened drinks and many restaurants and restaurant chains have started to offer healthy drinks on the kid’s menu. These public health strategies are working. For those who drink the most sweetened beverages, equal to about three and a half cans of soda a day, the amount they drink daily is trending down according to a study reported in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Between 2003 to 2016 all children drank less sweetened drinks (10.9% down to 3.3%) and adults also drank less (12.7% down to 9.1%). The declines were most significant in the 20 to 39-year-old group. But there was no change in the consumption of sweetened drinks in the 40 to 59-year-old group.
