One in every three Americans needs more sleep. Too little sleep has been linked to poorer eating habits, increased risk for chronic diseases, a shortened lifespan, and decreased mental health. The purpose of sleep is not only to rest the body but research suggests sleep may help remove toxins from the brain that build up while we are awake.
Lack of sleep has been connected to a higher risk of being overweight due to poor food choices and eating too many calories. Not getting enough sleep may increase both hunger and appetite. Some research suggests that sleep deprivation may make the brain more sensitive to food stimuli, such as the sight and smells of food, making the desire to eat even more rewarding.
For adults, at least seven hours of sleep a night should be a priority if you want to be healthy and slimmer.
