New in the Market: Fab Slabs Antibacterial Cutting Boards

We enjoy trying new kitchen gadgets.  Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

Fab Slabs, naturally antibacterial wooden cutting boards, are made in Australia from salvaged Camphor Laurel logs. Camphor Laurel wood is tight-grained with small pores which reduces the accumulation of liquids and dirt on its surface.

Fab Slabs come in a variety of shapes and have been tested and accredited by NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) in Australia. Common food microbes – E.coli, salmonella, staph, and listeria – are unable to survive after a short time on the cutting boards. Though we have known for a long time that tight-grained wood surfaces are more hygienic than plastic cutting boards, Camphor Laurel appears to be both naturally and permanently antibacterial. Cutting boards that have been in use for as long as 7 years still showed zero bacterial growth.

The brand recommends washing Fab Slabs in warm soapy water and oiling with an edible oil (grapeseed oil is recommended) when the board appears to look dry. Fab Slabs should not be put in the dishwasher.

If you are looking for a cutting board that is both attractive and will last, Fab Slabs is a brand worth a try. It would make a useful gift for someone stocking their kitchen for the first time.
