New in the Market: Betterine Vegan Butter Alternative

by Jo-Ann Heslin, MA, RD, CDN on April 7, 2020 · 2 comments

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

Betterine is a nondairy alternative to butter for baking or cooking. It is based in coconut oil which has a been processed to have a neutral taste. We used it to fry and bake and in both situations it was a complete one-for-one replacement for butter or margarine. It is not a good substitute for butter on toast. Betterine does not offer enough flavor nor does it melt quickly on warm bread. The brand does not recommend this use.

Betterine come in 4-ounce sticks in an 8-ounce or 16-ounce package. It needs to be refrigerated and has a very solid texture and a white color. It melts easily and offers a neutral palette for baking. It is vegan, lactose free, and kosher certified OU and NSK (New Square Kosher).

A one tablespoon serving of Betterine has 82 calories, 9 grams of fat (8 of which are saturated fat), no carb, protein, potassium or sodium. In comparison, 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter has 102 calories and 12 grams of fat of which 7 grams are saturated fat.

We are a made in the U.S., B Corp producer of a kosher, vegan, plant based butter. While not new, we have reformulated recently and our sales (and customers) have taken off. We would love for you to try and review our butter sticks and spread. We believe we have the best tasting and performing plant butter on the market and are competing against the likes of Con-Agra and Upfield. Let me know if you are interested and we can have samples forwarded for your taste and technical testing.
Sincerely,
Andy Gustavsen V.P. of Sales Prosperity Organic Foods
