We’ve always known that a good meal releases the feel-good hormone dopamine and drives the desire to eat. Dopamine is released when we eat a food and a second time when food reaches the stomach.
A recent study from Germany showed that when we crave a highly desired food it can suppress the stomach-induced dopamine release and cause overeating. As a rule, humans eat until sufficient dopamine is released in the brain to signal enough pleasure to end the meal. Without the additional release of dopamine when food enters the stomach, overeating is likely.
Now you know why you can’t stop eating chips or leave that box of fudge alone.
