We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.
Kivu noir, billed by the company as the world’s freshest coffee, is a single estate, specialty coffee of Rwandan Red Bourbon Arabica beans grown on the shores of Lake Kivu, Rwanda. Kivu noir coffee derives its freshness from many reasons. It is raised at high altitudes which makes the beans grow more slowly, concentrating flavor. Volcanic soils on the shores of Lake Kivu offer a good medium for growing coffee. And, Kivu noir controls the supply chain from crop to cup offering beans that go from harvest to the consumer in less then one month. Each bag of coffee, whether ground or whole beans, is traceable to the specific farm of origin.
The sample we received was whole bean coffee from the Nkora estate roasted on November 9, 2018. We received the sample the first week in December. Kivu noir can achieve this short farm to cup timeline because it roasts the beans in Rwanda close to where they are grown. The company employs mostly women, many survivors of the genocide of the early 1990s. Employment for women in Africa has consistently shown to uplift families, communities and education.
Kivu noir produces a brewed coffee robust in flavor. When we opened our bag of Kivu noir the smell of fresh coffee was delightful.
