We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

Terry Pirro grew up cooking with his big Italian family leading him to open Pirro’sRestaurante in Woodstock, Illinois. The restaurant became known for its pasta sauces which lead to daughter Brianna bringing Pirro’s Sauces to the retail market. Today Pirro’s is a women-owned business producing a line of traditional Italian sauces.

Five sauce varieties are available in 24-ounce jars.

Bolognese Sauce is a thick meat sauce made of veal and pancetta in a tomato/vegetable-based sauce. A one-half cup serving has 130 calories, 9 grams of fat, 5 grams of protein, 8 grams of carb (3 of which are sugar and 2 grams of fiber), and 550 milligrams of sodium.

Marinara Sauce is a traditional Italian tomato sauce. A one-half cup serving has 80 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, 2 grams of protein, 10 grams of carb (3 of which are sugar and 3 grams of fiber), and 520 milligrams of sodium.

Pesto Pomodoro is a very chunky tomato/cheese sauce. A one-half cup serving has 130 calories, 10 grams of fat, 3 grams of protein, 7 grams of carb (4 of which are sugar and 1 gram of fiber), and 280 milligrams of sodium.

Puttanesca Sauce is a very chunky tomato/olive sauce, flavored with anchovies. A one-half cup serving has 110 calories, 9 grams of fat, 1 gram of protein, 7 grams of carb (3 of which are sugar and 2 grams of fiber), and 380 milligrams of sodium.

Rustic Vodka is a thick tomato/cream sauce flavored with vodka. A one-half cup serving has 110 calories, 7 grams of fat, 2 grams of protein, 12 grams of carb (2 of which are sugar and 2 grams of fiber), and 300 milligrams of sodium.

Pizza Sauce is available in a 15.5-ounce jar. A quarter cup serving has 35 calories, no fat, 2 grams of protein, 6 grams of carb (4 of which are sugar and 3 grams of fiber), and 490 milligrams of sodium.

All Pirro’s Sauces are as close to homemade as you can get.

This is the second jar of sauces I have tried. The first being Bolognese, which was very good.
The second was the puttanesca sauce, which to me, was not good at all. I am throwing away the rest of the jar, unfortunately. The ingredients looked good when I read them before buying, but the olive taste is over powering and unpleasant.
I wouldn’t mind trying other sauces, but never this one again.
Thank you,
Suzanne. Southwell
