Everyone knows yogurt is good for you – rich in calcium and live cultures (probiotics) that keep your immune system in top condition, but now a new study suggests the more yogurt eaten the lower your risk for heart disease. A study in the American Journal of Hypertension looked at over 55,000 women (30 to 55 years old) and 18,000 men (40 to 75 years old) who had high blood pressure. For those that had two or more servings of yogurt each week, their risk for heart disease or stroke went down 20%.
Studies in the past have linked calcium intake and fermented foods with a lower risk for heart disease. Yogurt offers both which may be the reason it minimized the risk in the population studied.
Bottom line: Eating yogurt is good for you. Eating yogurt in combination with other healthy foods may be a good approach to lowering your risk for heart disease.
