New in the Market: POW! Mac And Cheese

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

Ancient Harvest introduced quinoa into the US over 35 years ago. Today they continue to innovate with POW! Mac and Cheese, pasta made from red lentil flour and quinoa flour. POW! offers a traditional comfort food without wheat-based pasta and with more protein and fiber than traditionally found in mac and cheese mixes.

POW! Mac and Cheese comes in three varieties. Each is easy to prepare. Simply cook the pasta following package directions and then add one-quarter cup milk and the included cheese packet. After an adult cooks and drains the pasta, even a child can mix, stir and eat the final product. Each package makes about 2.5 cups of cooked mac and cheese. A serving is considered 1 cup.

Mild Cheddar Elbows as prepared has 280 calories, 16 grams of protein, 7 grams of fiber, 320 milligrams of sodium and 25% of your daily iron requirement. Our adult tasters voted this as their favorite.

Sharp Cheddar Shells as prepared has 290 calories, 16 grams of protein, 7 grams of fiber, 310 milligrams of sodium and 25% of your daily iron requirement. Our young tasters voted this as their favorite.

White Cheddar Shells as prepared has 280 calories, 16 grams of protein, 7 grams of fiber, 290 milligrams of sodium and 25% of your daily iron requirement. Our tasters thought this variety had a very mild cheesy flavor.

Though POW! pasta is gluten free, for those with true celiac disease, the brand notes on the package that the pasta is produced in a facility that shares equipment with wheat.
