New in the Market: Pereg Kaniwa

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

Pereg Kaniwa Baby Quinoa is related to red quinoa, but smaller in size. It is grown in South Africa and is Certified Gluten Free, NonGMO Project Verified, and certified kosher (OU). It is available in 6-ounce and 16-ounce packages. Kaniwa cooks in 15 to 20 minutes into a tiny, reddish brown, slightly crunchy grain.

Kaniwa is definitely a blank canvas which benefits from the addition of broth for cooking, spices, vegetables or other additions to round out a side dish or as the base for a main dish. A quarter cup cooked has 178 calories, 2 grams of fat, 7.5 grams of protein, 32 grams of carb (with no sugar and 4.9 grams of fiber), and 3 milligrams of sodium. Kaniwa is a good source of plant-based iron.
