We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.
4th & Heart is an artisanal food brand that wants to bring ancient pantry foods into today’s kitchens. Their first product launch is a line of spreadable butters known as ghee which is made from the milk of grass fed cows.
Ghee is clarified butter which has been slow cooked until the water evaporates and the fat is separated from the milk solids. Ghee has a high smoke point which makes it more versatile in cooking than butter which will burn at high temperatures. 4th & Heart Ghee does not need to be refrigerated after opening and is lactose free. The brand is available in five flavors all of which are kosher certified (Star K). We tasted three.
Original has 45 calories per teaspoon, 5 grams of fat, 10 milligrams of cholesterol and no sodium, protein or carb. We used it to fry eggs and it gave breakfast an added lovely flavor. It is recommended for sautéing, searing or to use on toast.
California Garlic has 45 calories per teaspoon, 5 grams of fat, 10 milligrams of cholesterol and no sodium, protein or carb. It has a delicate garlic aroma. We used it to add flavor to a stir-fry. It is recommended for sautéing meat or chicken, or to use over pasta or vegetables.
White Truffle Salt has 45 calories per teaspoon, 5 grams of fat, 10 milligrams of cholesterol, 40 milligrams of sodium and no protein or carb. It is recommended for cooking eggs or meat and to use on toast.
This brand is excellent and well worth a try.
