We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.
The market for gluten-free foods has grown to over $11 billion and more than one-quarter of Americans claim to be cutting back on traditional products to avoid gluten, the protein found in wheat. To meet this growing consumer demand, more and more companies are offering gluten-free options. Here are two gluten-free brands.
Eggo long known as a major brand in the frozen waffle category has introduced Eggo Gluten Free Waffles in Original and Cinnamon flavors. Both taste and heat much like traditional Eggo waffles and our tasters were unaware that they had been served a gluten-free option.
The waffles are made of rice and whole oat flour and the company assured us that the oat flour had been sourced from a gluten-free resource. Two waffles have 170 calories, 27 grams of carb (4 grams of which are sugar and 2 gram s fiber), 5 grams of fat, 4 grams of protein, 260 milligrams of sodium and 75 milligrams of potassium. Eggo Gluten Free Waffles are kosher certified (OU).
Pastariso’s Mac Uncheddar mix is vegan, lactose free, dairy free, gluten free and soy free. The package directions suggest making it with a vegan spread and almond or rice milk substitute. It can be made with traditional products for those who are not vegan or lactose intolerant. The mix is easy to prepare – cook the pasta and drain, add spread, milk substitute and seasoning mix, stir and serve. Some of our tasters thought the dish was salty but a serving had 243 milligrams of sodium which is not high. The package says it makes 2 ½ servings but these would be small. An adult or hungry teen could easily eat the entire mix as a main dish. Mac Uncheddar is Certified Gluten-Free, Certified Vegan, and kosher certified (СOR).
Next week we will be looking at two gluten-free snack brands.
