10 Tips to Prevent Cancer

The American Institute for Cancer Research offers practical tips to help prevent cancer.

  1. Keep your weight within a healthy range and try not to gain weight as an adult.
  2. Be physically active – walk more, sit less.
  3. Eat whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and beans as part of your daily diet.
  4. Limit fast food and highly processed food rich in fat, starches, and sugars.
  5. Eat moderate amounts of red meat. Eat little processed meat.
  6. Limit sugar-sweetened drinks.
  7. Limit alcohol. For cancer prevention, less is best.
  8. Meet your nutritional need through diet rather than depending on supplements.
  9. For mothers: breastfeeding is good for both you and your baby. Breastfeed if you can.
  10. Avoid smoking and excessive exposure to the sun.
