New in the Market: Buddy’s Allergen-Free Cakes

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

Buddy’s Allergen-Free Cakes were born out of necessity by a mother with a seriously allergic son – Buddy. The cakes are free of gluten, dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, corn syrup, artificial flavors and artificial colors. The flour blend is made up of brown rice, sorghum, arrowroot, potato starch and chia.

In addition to being allergen-free, what makes Buddy’s unique is that they are single-serve, microwave cakes that cook in a mug in 1 minute. Each package contains 2 cake mixes. You simply mix the cake mix in a 10-ounce mug with 3 tablespoons of milk (dairy or nondairy) and 1 tablespoon of oil and microwave for 1 minute, then top with the frosting packet.

Buddy’s comes in 4 flavors:

Very Vanilla with Vanilla Bean Frosting has 250 calories for the cake mix and 260 calories for the frosting packet.

Chocolate Fudge with Chocolate Fudge Frosting has 240 calories for the cake mix and 240 calories for the frosting packet. Our younger tasters voted this variety their favorite.

Warm Spice with Salted Date Caramel Frosting has 240 calories for the cake mix and 260 calories for the frosting packet. Our adult tasters voted this variety their favorite.

Lemonade with Lemonade Frosting has 210 calories for the cake mix and 240 calories for the frosting packet.

Children can easily make this dessert and they will have fun cooking the cakes. For some, the addition of frosting makes the cakes a little too sweet. We found eating the cake plain or using less icing was an option for those who like Buddy’s less sweet. For a gluten free cake, the texture and taste were very close to a traditional flour-based cake.
