We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

Cocavo is a privately-owned company in New Zealand that supplies coconut oil products from farms in the South Pacific, New Zealand and California. Cocavo is a mixture of coconut oil and avocado oil which go through minimal processing and are sourced from farms that do not use herbicides and pesticides.

Cocavo’s packaging is unique. The bright colors and 14-ounce tub shape will make it stand out on the oil aisle. It also helps to keep out light to slow down the oxidation of the oils to keep them fresh. The brand recommends using Cocavo within 3 months of opening the tub. It can be stored in the pantry and only needs to be refrigerated if you prefer a harder fat or live in a very hot climate.

The combination of coconut and avocado oil produces a semi-solid fat with a high smoking point. The smoking point of oils is the temperature at which they burn, smoke and impart an unpleasant taste to foods. Coconut oil is made up of 86% saturated lauric acid, which is considered a healthy saturated fat with antibacterial, antioxidant and antiviral properties. Avocado oil is made up of 70% healthy monounsaturated fat and is high in vitamin E.

Cocavo comes in 5 varieties. One tablespoon has 120 calories, 14 grams of fat (11 saturated) and no protein, carb or sodium.
