New in the Market: La Tourangelle Walnut Oil

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

La Tourangelle is a family owned company that specializes in producing artisanal oils. The company originated and is still active in Saumur, France. In 2002 La Tourangelle opened an artisan oil mill in the California Bay area.

We tasted Roasted Walnut Oil and non-aerosol Walnut Spray Oil. To produce walnut oils, La Tourangelle first roasts California walnuts and then extracts the oil using a hydraulic press. The oil is then lightly filtered and bottled which results in a light nutty flavor.

Many believe that walnut oil is the best oil to use for salad dressings. Because walnut oil has a low smoking point, the temperature at which the oil will degrade or smoke when heated, it is best used for low temperature cooking or as a finishing oil after cooking. The Walnut Spray Oil added a nice finishing taste to vegetables or pasta. The spray top allows you to pressure control the release of the oil with a drip, stream or spray.

Walnuts are rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fats and La Tourangelle’s Roasted Walnut Oil has 1.40 grams in a 1 tablespoon serving. It is NonGMO Project Verified and kosher (Star K).
