New in the Market: Brandless

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

Brandless, a company launched in July 2017, with a new business model that wants to provide everyday essential items – food, beauty, household and cleaning – all at very low prices, $3 or less. Time will tell if this concept catches on but the idea is intriguing. The core mission of the company is to provide quality products without the hidden costs of buying brand names.

We sampled some of the food items. For all items, the packaging is simple, unadorned, providing simply the name of the food, simple descriptive information, instructions for preparation when needed, along with mandatory nutrition labeling and ingredient listing. The food items look very utilitarian. However, the taste, for all we tried, was quite good.

For English Breakfast Tea, 20 teabags to a box, each teabag was individually wrapped in a cellophane envelope for freshness, a packaging step you rarely find in traditional tea brands.

The Chocolate Chip Cookie Thins, Sea Salt Quinoa Chips, Honey (organic), Virgin Coconut Oil (organic, sourced from Sri Lanka), Creamy Peanut Butter (organic), and Shells & White Cheddar (organic) mix could compete with any brand.

Depending on the food, some are fair trade, USDA certified organic, others are kosher certified, or certified gluten free. All foods are distributed by Brandless

Brandless has partnered with Feeding America and donates the cost of one meal every time an order is placed on brandless.com with the goal of donating $150,000 within the next year.
