Wzing-dark-chocolate-milk-bare love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

When you stand in front of the nutrition bar shelf at your local store you could get dizzy attempting to sort out the variety of bars available. One way to pick a good brand is by knowing that the nutrition bar has been formulated by a group of registered dietitians (RDs). Zing is such a brand.

There are 12 flavors. All are Certified Gluten-Free, and kosher certified (OU). There are 9 vegan varieties which are based in brown rice or pea protein and 3 varieties based in whey protein.

We tasted 8 of the 12 varieties. Zing bars can be grouped into 3 categories: chocolate coated, soft cookie, and fruits and nuts. We enjoyed some, not others, and some were OK. You need to give the flavors a try to find your favorites. A nice way to experiment is with the Mini Zing bars which are 0.78-ounce and 90 to 110 calories. The larger bars (1.76 ounces) have 190 to 220 calories. All Zing bars are high in protein, contain fiber and are free of artificial colors and flavors.

Vegan varieties include: Coconut Cashew Crisp, Dark Chocolate Mint, Oatmeal Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, Dark Chocolate Coconut, Cashew Cranberry Orange, Dark Chocolate Hazelnut, Double Nut Brownie, and Dark Chocolate Mocha.

Whey based bars include: Almond Blueberry, Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Lemon Cashew Crunch.
