New in the Market: Ravino Handcrafted Artisan Ravioli and Gabriella’s Kitchen Skinnypasta

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.
ravinoRavino Ravioli is a family owned business that produces handcrafted ravioli. The ravioli are frozen with 12 pieces to a box that are carefully packaged to prevent breaking. We found the pasta firm, not soft, which keeps the pieces intact during cooking. We had no breakage during cooking in the four flavors we tried.
Cheese – is made with ricotta and parmesan cheese. Four ravioli have 170 calories, 8 grams of fat, 10 grams of protein, 12 grams of carb, 290 milligrams of sodium and 200 milligrams of calcium.
In the remaining three flavors, cheese was not the dominate ingredient which truly brought out the individual flavors of the ravioli variety.
Chickpea & Kale – Four ravioli have 130 calories, 6 grams of fat, 6 grams of protein, 13 grams of carb, 180 milligrams of sodium and 100 milligrams of calcium. This was our favorite variety.
Mushroom & Fontina – This variety is made with crimini, white and shitake mushrooms. Four ravioli have 110 calories, 4 grams of fat, 5 grams of protein, 13 grams of carb, 105 milligrams of sodium and 80 milligrams of calcium.
Spinach & Ricotta – There is more spinach than ricotta in these ravioli. Four ravioli have 150 calories, 8 grams of fat, 7 grams of protein, 12 grams of carb, 150 milligrams of sodium and 150 milligrams of calcium.
skinnypasta linguine-300Gabriella’s Kitchen Skinnypasta is a Canadian firm but the pasta can be bought online in the US. The company was started by two sisters and renamed Gabriella’s Kitchen by the surviving founder in 2015. The company makes frozen pasta that is higher in protein and lower in carb than traditional brands. We tasted two of the plain pasta varieties and two of the frozen pasta entrees.
High Protein Linguine – cooks in a minute and a half. You are cautioned not to overcook and to combine with sauce immediately after cooking. The texture was good and went well with sauce. The package (8.82 ounces) recommends four servings. Each serving has 110 calories, 0.5 grams of fat, 13 grams of protein, 15 grams of carb (no sugar and 5 grams of fiber) and 75 milligrams of sodium.
Teff Penne Superfood – cooks in one and half minutes and is vegan and gluten free. One package (7 ounces) recommends two servings. Each serving has 230 calories, 5 grams of fat, 9 grams of protein, 38 grams of carb (no sugar and 6 grams of fiber) and 15 milligrams of sodium.
Frozen entrees can be cooked in the microwave or in the oven.
3-Cheese Spinach Ravioli – is gluten free. The ravioli is combined with a light tomato sauce. One package (10.5 ounces) has 290 calories, 12 grams of fat, 12 grams of protein, 37 grams of carb (6 grams sugar and 4 grams of fiber), 640 milligrams of sodium and 330 milligrams of potassium. The texture of the ravioli was softer than traditional wheat pasta but the taste was quite good.
Gnocchi In Pomodoro Sauce – is gluten free and vegan. One package (10.5 ounces) has 270 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, 3 grams of protein, 57 grams of carb (4 grams sugar and 3 grams of fiber), 490 milligrams of sodium and 450 milligrams of potassium. The texture of the gnocchi is much softer than traditional wheat varieties but the taste was very good.
