New in the Market: Cereal Kellogg’s Raisin Bran with Cranberries and Flahavan’s Oatmeal

Both of these brands have long, well-deserved histories.

RBCranPicture-300Kellogg’s Raisin Bran was introduced in the middle 1940s. It has reinvented itself along the way with new variations, the newest being Raisin Bran with Cranberries which just hit the marketplace. The famous “two scoops” now is made up of half raisins and half dried cranberries which provide a pleasant new taste to an old favorite.

A 1 ¼ cup serving (2 ounces) has 200 calories, 1 gram of fat, 4 grams of protein, 5 grams of fiber, 210 milligrams of potassium and 210 milligrams of sodium plus a substantial contribution of 13 other vitamins and minerals.

Flahavan’s Irish Oatmeal proudly states on the package grown, milled, produced, and packed in Ireland. Flahavan’s Irish Oatmeal has been milled at the Kilnagrange Mills for over 225 years and is still a privately family-owned – 7th generation – food company.flahavans-products-photohighres-300

The oats used in all Flahavan products are grown locally and processed with the oats outer shells to give the oat flakes their natural texture, golden color and nutty taste. If you love old fashioned oatmeal this is a brand worth a try. We tried Irish Steel Cut Oatmeal which requires longer cooking that can be shortened by soaking the oats overnight, and traditional Irish Oatmeal, which cooks in 3 to 5 minutes. Both are kosher certified (KLBD). One serving of either variety, cooked with water, has 150 calories, 2 grams of fat, 4 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber, and no sodium.
