Untitled-1We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

We are always encouraging people to eat more whole grains but many consumers are unsure what to do with the more unique products on the market like quinoa and wheat berries. Betty Crocker has introduced a selection of Suddenly Salad Grains. When we first were introduced to this product, we were skeptical, but were pleasantly surprised at how good they were.

Suddenly Salad Grains comes in 3 varieties.

Southwest Grains has brown rice, quinoa, black beans, corn, and red peppers with chipotle vinaigrette dressing – a ½-cup cooked has 170 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, 3 grams of fiber, and 290 milligrams of sodium.

Tuscan Grains has brown rice, wheat berries, quinoa, almonds, and red peppers with tomato parmesan herb dressing – a ½-cup cooked has 210 calories, 9 grams of fat, 2 grams of fiber, and 290 milligrams of sodium.

Harvest Grains has brown, wild and red rice, quinoa, cranberries and almonds with blush wine vinaigrette dressing – a ½-cup cooked has 200 calories, 7 grams of fat, 3 grams of fiber, and 170 milligrams of sodium.

To prepare the salad you place the grain bag in boiling water for 17 minutes. After cooking you mix with 1 tablespoon of oil, 1 tablespoon of water and the dressing mix. The grain salads can be served warm or cold and they can be coupled with diced chicken, shrimp or additional fresh vegetables or even crunchy chopped pears or apples.

Love the grains with quinoa…but I don’t add the cranberries and almonds or the dressing. I would love to know what the calorie count is without those extras thrown on! I give the pouch of almonds and cranberries to my 17 year old to snack on and I actually use the dressing packet with just water and put on a salad of kale and a salad topping mix of nuts and cranberries. So good!!
