New in the Market: Crispy Green Fruit Snacks

by Jo-Ann Heslin, MA, RD, CDN on September 29, 2010 · 10 comments

We love to try new foods. Some are great and become staples in our kitchen. Others don’t measure up. See what you think.

Crispy Green produces freeze-dried fruit in snack-sized bags. The company claims to select the best fruit varieties to develop products that are intended to be eaten as snacks. All varieties – Fuji apples, bananas, Asian pears, pineapples, and mangoes – are natural and skinless, without additives or preservatives. If the full bag is not eaten at one sitting, you need to put the remaining fruit into a zip lock bag or plastic container or the fruit becomes soft as it picks up moisture from the air.

One serving (1 package) has 35 to 55 calories, no fat, 1 gram of fiber (less than a fresh fruit) and a modest amount of vitamins. In a perfect world we’d all walk around munching on fresh fruit. In reality, this is a healthy snack and a better choice than candy, cookies or chips.

I am on a pre-dialysis kidney diet, and am only allowed a minimum amount of milligrams of potassium and phosphorus each day. Please let me know how much of each are in your 100% freeze-dried apples and Asian pears. Net wt. of each bag is 0.36 oz. I am addicted to these snacks and hate to give them up,

Thank you.

We requested the potassium information from the company, but sadly we have not gotten a reply. The nutrition labeling law does not require potassium values on labels, so many companies do not analyze products for this mineral. A 1/2 cup of dried apples has 192 milligrams of potassium; a half cup of dried pears has 480 milligrams. Dried fruits are not exactly the same as freeze-dried items but it will give you a rough estimate. I hope that helps.

Dear Ms. Heslin –

Thank you for your answer – as a kidney patient, I can not make mistakes about these minerals. There are so many late stage kidney patients on the internet with the same dietary problems – One of the big differences between dried and freeze dried fruits is that there are usually additional ingredients in the processing of dried fruits as opposed to freeze dried fruits. If this information is ever put on your packaging, you may find a very large, grateful and untapped market among the many kidney patients in this country.

Thank you – Marta May

Dear Marta,

We do not have the exact value of pottassium and phosphorus for the two products you requested. However, we would be happy to run some tests on them and let you know when we have the results.

Thank you for being a fan of Crispy Green!

Dear Marta,

As promised, we have done some analyses on the potassium and the phosporus contents on our products. For the Crispy Apples and Crispy Asian Pears, each 0.36 oz bag contains 80 – 95 mg potassium and 6 – 8 mg phosphorus. Hope this is helpful for you.

Healthful yours,

My 3 year old son loves this snack. Do you know if there is any risk because this product is made in china? I have herd that quality control is not so great over there and I am concerned about melamine etc.

thank you

I understand your concern because of past issues related to products made in China. We have been selling our Crispy Fruit products for over 6 years and we proudly can say that we have not had any quality complaint on our products. I want to assure you that Crispy Green has a deep commitment to quality and safety of its products. We have vigorous quality control systems in place to make sure that every product we sell meets our high quality standards.

We start with top-quality fresh fruit, sourced from certified, carefully selected growers who undergo a stringent audit review process. Qualified fruit is subsequently processed and freeze dried in facilities that are U.S. FDA-registered, internationally-certified (i.e. HACCP Certified) according to the strict quality standards which includes limits set for pesticides and contaminants.

Our products have not only passed the quality controls in China but, more importantly, they are tested independently by the FDA or FDA certified labs in the U.S. routinely. This allows us for instance to respond firmly to specific questions from our customers on product additives (there are none) and any concerns about ingredients. When we test our products, the lab results confirm that our product is in compliance with the FDA specifications. To demonstrate our commitment, we have a trained professional on our team that addresses Food Quality & Safety and monitors our compliance with the latest FDA standards and requirements.

It might surprise you – the main reason for us to produce our products in China is because of the quality. China is the world leading freeze-dried fruits and vegetables producer and it produces some of highest quality products in this category. Many US food companies purchase freeze-dried fruit from China including a large percent of freeze-dried fruit commonly used in the breakfast cereals sold in the US (Most consumers would not have known this because there is no requirement for the cereal manufacturers to declare the source of each ingredient.)

In addition, Our CEO/Founder travels to China at least 4 times annually to inspect the manufacturing facilities and ensure they meet the highest standards of quality. Because our Crispy Fruit has only single ingredient, it makes it easy for us to implement rigorous quality control for our products and also customers can feel confident about exactly what they are consuming.

I hope this addresses your concerns.
